EXHIBITION OF JOSÉ GUERRERO AND ESTEBAN VICENTE

30.10.2019
The Guerrero / Vicente exhibition can be visited at the José Guerrero Center, Granada, from today October 30, 2019 to January 12, 2020.

In this ed In this exhibition you can enjoy a careful selection of works by the only two artists of Spanish origin who became part of the movement known as American Abstract Expressionism.

It is composed of more than sixty works of different formats and in different media whose origin is varied, since there are numerous pieces that come from private collections, as well as loans from some of the main Spanish public collections: Reina Sofía National Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, National Heritage, Patio Herreriano Museum or Banco de España Collection.

It is an unrepeatable occasion to meet first-hand at the same time these two great painters who have always been treated separately, despite the coincidences that can be found along their respective paths. Parallels that not only refer to their careers, but extrapolate to personal circumstances: the two lived their initial stages in Madrid and Paris, married women of American nationality and settled definitively in New York.

The exhibition has been structured based on three distinct stages. The first refers to the figurative beginnings of both artists, with a selection of their landscapes. The second, studies the importance of experimentation on paper to acquire the new abstract codes and is complemented by a set of oil paintings on canvas of the 50s. The third stage reflects how the two artists reach maturity in the production of the years 70, leaving behind abstract expressionism to give way to works that develop color fields. Also highlighted within the exhibition, three pieces by two great masters: Joan Miró and Juan Gris.
